A study of U.S. violent crime data, released this week by the non-profit Violence Policy Center (VPC), shows that Americans very-rarely use guns in self defense. That and more stats that surfaced in their studies show that this nation’s “well-regulated militia” clearly isn’t well, nor is it regulated.
A truly overwhelming majority of Americans—a near-total 99.2 percent—did not use a gun to protect themselves when they were subjected to a crime.
Another disturbing detail in the crime data: many Americans who used a gun to kill in self-defense, killed someone they actually knew. More than 35 percent of justifiable homicides in the U.S. occurred between people who knew one another. Americans with guns, they’re literally killing their acquaintances.
